On WHS2007, Drive Extender did that and kept keystones. It's not very effificient (not to mention, easy) to figure out which file can fit where as you fill up drives. More than that, I have a basic question (which maybe I should have asked first).is OMV the right OS for me, moving from WHS? From what I can tell, OMV doesn't pool all my storage drives and distribute data among them. Is this for the database of media on the server only? It's not limiting the storage it will scan to that drive, correct? PMS wants a database volume and when clicking on it, gives me the choice of the HDDs I have installed. This is where I've stopped and decided to ask for some help.

I also managed to install the Plex Media Server, though I'm not sure how to configure it within OMV. Even though I've not figured out how to make use of all the ones I installed, this was more of a learning exercise to see if I could figure it out. Using Putty I connected with SSH and installed plugins like Couchpotato, Sickbeard, etc using jhmiller's script.

I created a share on it called Public and that's about as far as I've gotten with respect to adding storage. I found a sort-of walk through in setting up OMV and managed to mount one. I created 1 user and a group (adding that user to the group). I configured FTP & SSH and verified both work. I deleted all data off the 5 (all 2TB) HDDs from the WHS install (all still formatted NTFS). I copied all my data from the WHS drives onto new HDDs for backup. After reading about both, I decided to install OMV.even though I have no experience with Linux (which has been tough!) I installed it a couple nights ago and after finding it frustrating and not very intuitive, went looking for an alternative. Did some research and saw MS dumped the drive extender (which didn't go over well among the WHS v1 users), but I figured WHS v1 was easy to setup and meant for the home user, surely WHS 2011 even without the DE, must be similar. So, I figured, since WHS2011 was released years ago, why not upgrade. I'd had the system drive go out on me once, which wasn't a lot of fun to replace and lately I've been getting SMART errors which I suspect were false positives (found some info that said the SMART plugin had a tendency to do that).

The add-in allows a user to transfer files from the TiVo to the MediaSmart WHS and back and then also watch shows from any PC or Mac provided you use the correct software for TiVo’s DRM.

HP has created what to some will certainly be a killer add-in.
